In my video on the problem with index funds, I compared DFUS - a low-cost total U.S. market ETF that doesn’t follow an index, to VTI, a total U.S. market index ETF, to illustrate how not following an index can be beneficial.

Despite these two ETFs being total market funds that are similar along most dimensions, DFUS has outperformed VTI since it listed as an ETF in June 2021.
